     The history of Del's Barber shop and Beauty Salon owes a lot to a cat named Smokey Joe. In 1986, after many years of operating a barber shop in Kenosha, Wisconsin, Del decided that Sebastian, Florida would be a great place to start up a new business. He left his Kenosha shop in the hands of his children, and started what was at that time, the only barber shop in a Sebastian, Florida building.

     While cutting a customer's hair, Del was told that Norman Phlam had passed away. Norman owned the property at 1413 N Central, which was a home overlooking the Indian River. Norman's will specified that his cat "Smokey Joe", Would be the heir and owner of the property.

     Del negotiated with the cat's attorney in the court house of Vero Beach, Florida. Del placed a bid for the propert, and that allowed Smokey Joe to spend the rest of his life with a local businessman, Bill Lewis.
